Which vignettes, tolls and city stickers your road trip needs, the cheapest mix for your dates, and where to buy at the official price. 27 countries, checked on 12 October 2026.
- Free, no sign-up
- Official shops only, no resellers
- Reminders for your calendar
How the checker works
Add the countries you drive through, your dates and your vehicle. If two countries in a row do not share a border, the checker offers the countries in between, and you can hold and drag a country to change the order. Going to the UK, it adds the Channel crossing by Le Shuttle or ferry. For every country that sells vignettes, the checker finds the cheapest mix that covers the days you drive there, and links only to the official shop. Tolls, bridges and tunnels come with their 2026 prices: tick the ones on your way and they go into the total.
An example: through Austria on a Saturday and back the next Saturday, one 10-day vignette for €12.80 covers both days, while two 1-day vignettes cost €19.20. In Slovenia there is no 1-day vignette, so one monthly vignette (€32) or two weekly ones (€32) are the choice.
Copy the checklist, add the reminders to your calendar or share the trip with whoever drives with you.

Vignette countries
Eight countries charge cars by time instead of distance: Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. All but the Austrian sticker are digital: the vignette is linked to your number plate, so there is nothing to glue on and a typo in the plate is the most common costly mistake.
Austria: vignette prices 2026
Austria sells 1-day, 10-day, 2-month and annual vignettes. The 2026 short-term vignettes can start until 30 November 2026. Buy the digital vignette in the ASFINAG shop, or at petrol stations, tobacconists and ÖAMTC or ADAC offices.

- The Brenner, Tauern, Pyhrn, Karawanken and Arlberg tolls come on top of the vignette.
- From 1 December 2026 the vignette is digital only. The 2027 prices were not out on 12 October 2026.
- Fake shops with look-alike addresses take money and deliver nothing. Buy only on asfinag.at.
- No vignette is needed on the first stretch after three borders: A1 Walserberg to Salzburg Nord, A12 Kufstein to Kufstein-Süd, A14 Hörbranz to Hohenems.
Without a vignette: Substitute toll of €200 since 1 January 2026; if unpaid, fines of €300 to €3,000.

County e-matricas are annual and cover one county each (HUF 7,190 for a car in 2026). Worth it only if you use the same short stretch often.
Watch out:

- Buy before you drive on the motorway. If you got on by mistake, you have 60 minutes.

- Keep the receipt for 2 years.

- Lost ticket: you pay from the farthest entry unless you declare your real one online.
- Fake text messages about unpaid tolls circulate. Pay only on the operators' own sites.
Official: Autostrade per l'Italia: pay a missed toll, Pedemontana Lombarda: pay a trip.

Driving into cities

- Rental companies add their own fee to the invoice.

Fake vignette shops and resellers
Search for a vignette and the first results are often resellers. They are legal in most countries, but they add a fee to the official price, and some exclude your right to cancel. Fake shops with look-alike addresses take the money and register nothing. These are the official addresses:
| Country | Official sites |
|---|---|
| Austria | asfinag.at, shop.asfinag.at |
| Switzerland | via.admin.ch, e-vignette.ch, bazg.admin.ch |
| Slovenia | evinjeta.dars.si, dars.si |
| Czechia | edalnice.gov.cz, edalnice.cz |

Quick answers
- Do I need a vignette in Germany?
- No. Cars and motorcycles pay nothing on German motorways. Only two tunnels charge: the Herrentunnel in Lübeck and the Warnowtunnel in Rostock. A green Umweltplakette is needed to drive into 35 city centres.
- Do I need a vignette in Italy, France or Croatia?
- No. These countries charge tolls by distance, paid at booths or barriers. Croatia plans to switch to toll gantries without booths from 1 March 2027.
- What is the 18-day rule in Austria?
- A 2-month or annual digital vignette bought online from ASFINAG as a private buyer is valid only from the 18th day, because of the right to cancel. Bought at a petrol station, a tobacconist or an ÖAMTC or ADAC office it is valid at once, and the 1-day and 10-day vignettes are valid at once online too.
- How much is the Austrian vignette in 2027?
- Not published on 12 October 2026. In 2025 the new prices came out on 8 October. From 1 December 2026 the vignette is digital only. The 2026 prices are €9.60 for 1 day, €12.80 for 10 days, €32 for 2 months and €106.80 for the year.
- Is there a short-term vignette for Switzerland?
- No. There is only the annual vignette for CHF 40, valid for 14 months from 1 December to 31 January of the year after next. A trailer or caravan needs its own.
- Is there a 1-day vignette in Slovenia?
- No. The shortest is the weekly e-vignette for €16. For a trip there and back more than a week apart, one monthly vignette (€32) costs the same as two weekly ones.
- Do electric cars need a vignette?
- In most countries yes. In Czechia electric and hydrogen cars are free, but a foreign car must file the free exemption notice on edalnice.gov.cz before driving. In Romania electric cars pay the lowest price.
- Do motorcycles need a vignette?
- In Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia and Hungary yes. In Czechia, Slovakia and Bulgaria no. In Romania motorcycles are not in the car categories and are taken to be free, which we could not confirm.
- Do I need a vignette for a trailer or caravan?
- In Switzerland yes, CHF 40 each. In Hungary only behind a D2 vehicle such as a van. In Slovakia and Bulgaria only if car and trailer together weigh over 3.5 t. In Austria, Slovenia and Czechia no.
- How do I pay tolls in Portugal with a foreign car?
- Booths take cards and cash, but several motorways have only gantries. Before you drive on them, link a card to your plate with EASYToll at the Spanish border or online, buy a prepaid Toll Card, or use a compatible tag such as Via-T or Bip&Go.
- What if I drive without a vignette?
- Austria charges a €200 substitute toll, Switzerland CHF 200 plus the vignette, Slovenia €300, Hungary a HUF 27,790 surcharge, Bulgaria a €46.50 compensation fee, and Czechia up to CZK 20,000.
- How up to date is this?
