Your bag
Measure with wheels, handles and side pockets, packed. The order of the sides does not matter.
AirlinesAll 27 airlines
Where your bag fits
How it works
Enter the three sides of your bag, in any order, and its weight if you know it. For each airline you see whether the bag flies free as the small bag under the seat, and whether it is allowed as a cabin bag in the overhead locker. The sides are compared longest to longest, so the bag may be turned any way.
Every size comes from the airline’s own page, read on 15 October 2026. Ryanair’s figures are from our check of its page in September 2026. We add an airline only after reading its official rules.
New on 15 October 2026: British Airways, Air France, Iberia, Austrian Airlines, Finnair, LOT, ITA Airways, Croatia Airlines, Transavia and Condor, and for each airline what its own page says about adding a cabin bag later and about fees at the airport or gate.

The bag that fits everywhere
- Free, under the seat: 40 × 30 × 15 cm fits the free allowance of 21 of the 25 European airlines here. Aer Lingus (33 × 25 × 20 cm), LOT (only 12 cm deep), Croatia Airlines (only 10 cm deep) and Norwegian (only 38 cm long) want a smaller one.
- On the low-cost airlines (Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, Jet2, Eurowings, Volotea and Transavia), 40 × 30 × 20 cm flies free; Norwegian takes up to 38 × 30 × 20 cm. At SWISS, Lufthansa, Austrian, KLM, Air France, British Airways, Iberia, SAS, Finnair, airBaltic, TAP, ITA Airways, Condor and Pegasus the free item may only be 15 cm deep.
- Cabin bag: a 55 × 40 × 20 cm trolley fits every cabin bag allowance in Europe here except KLM and Air France, where the bag may be only 35 cm wide. A 55 × 35 × 20 cm bag fits all 27 airlines.
- The common 55 × 40 × 23 cm trolley is 3 cm too deep for Ryanair and too wide for KLM and Air France.
- From 23 October 2027: new EU rules (Regulation (EU) 2026/2202) oblige airlines to let every passenger take one personal item into the cabin at no extra cost: up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm, or one that fits under the seat in front. This applies to flights covered by the EU air passenger rules; Switzerland still has to take over the new rules.
If it does not fit: adding a cabin bag and gate fees
What each airline’s own page says about adding a cabin bag after booking, and about bags that are too big or not booked at the airport. Where a page gives no price, we say so. Ryanair’s page cannot be read automatically, so it is not in this table.
| Airline | Adding a cabin bag later | At the airport or gate |
|---|---|---|
| easyJet | Add it later in Manage Bookings or the app, even after check-in. Online is always cheaper than at the gate. | If you wait until the airport, a large cabin bag costs £60. |
| Wizz Air | Add WIZZ Priority after booking in your WIZZ Account or through the Call Centre. | Going over the limits costs extra, and bags bought at the airport cost more than online. No amount published. |
| Eurowings | BASIC: add it when booking or later, from €18, in the Eurowings app or through the Call Centre. | Hand baggage that breaks the rules goes in the hold for a fee. |
| Volotea | Not stated on its page | Bags that do not fit are put in the hold at the gate for a fee, listed in Volotea’s service fees table. |
| Transavia | From €12.99 one way, when booking or later until 2 hours before departure, in My Transavia or at online check-in. | Not booked: €60 at the airport, and the bag goes in the hold. |
| Condor | Economy Zero: add a cabin bag from CHF 10 until 3 hours before departure on short and medium-haul flights. | Too heavy or more than your fare allows: excess baggage fees at check-in, and up to CHF 75 or €75 at the gate on short and medium-haul flights. |
| SWISS | Not stated on its page | Too big or not allowed: it goes in the hold for €60 to 110 or CHF 60 to 110, depending on the route, card only. |
| Lufthansa | Not stated on its page | Too big or not allowed: it goes in the hold for €60 to 110 or CHF 60 to 110, depending on the route, card only. |
| Austrian Airlines | Not stated on its page | Too big or not allowed: it goes in the hold for €60 to 110 or CHF 60 to 110, depending on the route, card only. |
| KLM | Basic fares: buy 1 piece of hand baggage in My Trip until 4 hours before departure. No price published. | Too large or too heavy: you check it in for a fee. |
| Air France | Basic fares: buy the Hand Baggage option when booking or later, until 4 hours before departure, in My Bookings or at the airport. No price published. | Not stated on its page |
| SAS | Economy Light: €16 one way between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe if bought more than 4 hours before departure, €35 after that. Other prices on domestic and southern European routes. | At the airport, at check-in or the gate: €50 between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. |
| Finnair | Economy Superlight: an extra carry-on bag can be bought. No price published. | Not bought or included, too big or too heavy: €60 to put it in the hold. |
| LOT Polish Airlines | Not stated on its page | Too big or too heavy: an extra charge applies. No amount published. |
| TAP Air Portugal | Not stated on its page | Too big or too heavy: it goes in the hold for €75 in low season or €90 in high season between Portugal and the rest of Europe, card only. |
| Aer Lingus | Not stated on its page | Bags outside the allowance must be checked in, and the bag fee applies. |
| Croatia Airlines | Not stated on its page | Too big: it goes in the hold, in some cases for a fee. |
| Pegasus | Light: buy a cabin bag later on flypgs.com or in the app; the price shows when you pay. | An extra piece or a bag that is too big pays a fee at boarding and goes in the hold. |
| WestJet | Not stated on its page | UltraBasic: a carry-on bag brought to the gate must be checked, with a checked bag fee and a service fee. |
Tips before you fly
- Measure everything. Wheels, handles and side pockets count. A full soft bag bulges, so measure it packed.
- Weigh it at home. easyJet allows 15 kg for each bag, Wizz Air 10 kg, Croatia Airlines 4 kg, Pegasus 3 kg, and TAP and LOT only 2 kg for the small bag. KLM, Air France, airBaltic, Finnair, Condor, Transavia, Volotea and Norwegian count both bags together.
- Book the cabin bag online. Bought at the airport it costs more: easyJet charges £60 for a large cabin bag added there, Transavia €60 and SAS €50.
- Check your fare. Economy Basic at SWISS, Lufthansa and Austrian, Basic at KLM and Air France, Economy Light at SAS, Superlight at Finnair, Economy Zero at Condor and MINI at airBaltic include only the small bag.
- At the gate staff use metal sizers. A bag that does not fit goes in the hold, and you pay for it: €60 to 110 at SWISS, Lufthansa and Austrian, €60 at Finnair.

- 40 × 30 × 20 cm, under the seat, on every fare. It was enlarged in 2025 from 40 × 20 × 25 cm. A cabin bag of 55 × 40 × 20 cm and up to 10 kg needs Priority or a fare that includes it.
- What is the easyJet small cabin bag size?

- Which bag fits all airlines?
- For free under the seat, 40 × 30 × 15 cm works on 21 of the 25 European airlines here; Aer Lingus, LOT, Croatia Airlines and Norwegian want a smaller one. As a cabin bag, 55 × 35 × 20 cm fits all 27 airlines.
- Is there a weight limit for the free bag?
- At some airlines: easyJet 15 kg, Wizz Air, Norwegian and Transavia 10 kg, Croatia Airlines 4 kg, Pegasus 3 kg, TAP and LOT 2 kg. Ryanair, SWISS, Lufthansa, Austrian, British Airways, Eurowings and Jet2 publish no weight for the small bag, but it has to fit under the seat.

- Often, and online it costs less than at the airport. Transavia charges from €12.99 one way until 2 hours before departure, Eurowings from €18, SAS €16 on Economy Light until 4 hours before, and Condor from CHF 10 on Economy Zero until 3 hours before. easyJet lets you add it even after check-in. KLM and Air France sell it for Basic fares until 4 hours before departure, without a published price.
- What happens if my bag is too big at the gate?
- It goes in the hold and you pay a fee. SWISS, Lufthansa and Austrian charge €60 to 110 or CHF 60 to 110 depending on the route, Finnair €60, TAP €75 or €90 within Europe and Condor up to CHF 75 at the gate. An unbooked cabin bag costs £60 at easyJet and €60 at Transavia at the airport.
- Why is my airline missing?
- We add an airline only after reading its official page. Vueling, Turkish Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Edelweiss, Aegean and Air Europa are next: on 15 October 2026 their pages could not be read automatically or did not give the sizes.
- How current is this?
- The pages were read on 15 October 2026, Ryanair’s in September 2026. Airlines change these rules without much notice: your booking shows what your fare includes.
