Where your bag fits
How it works
Enter the three sides of your bag, in any order, and its weight if you know it. For each airline you see whether the bag flies free as the small bag under the seat, and whether it is allowed as a cabin bag in the overhead locker. The sides are compared longest to longest, so the bag may be turned any way.
Every size comes from the airline’s own page, read on 13 October 2026. Ryanair’s figures are from our check of its page in September 2026. We add an airline only after reading its official rules.

The bag that fits everywhere
- Free, under the seat: 40 × 30 × 15 cm fits the free allowance of 14 of the 15 European airlines here. Only Aer Lingus is smaller (33 × 25 × 20 cm).
- On the low-cost airlines (Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, Jet2, Eurowings, Volotea and Norwegian), 40 × 30 × 20 cm flies free. At SWISS, Lufthansa, KLM, SAS, airBaltic, TAP and Pegasus the free item may only be 15 cm deep.
- Cabin bag: a 55 × 40 × 20 cm trolley fits every cabin bag allowance in Europe here except KLM, where the bag may be only 35 cm wide. A 55 × 35 × 20 cm bag fits all 17 airlines.
- The common 55 × 40 × 23 cm trolley is 3 cm too deep for Ryanair and too wide for KLM.
Tips before you fly
- Measure everything. Wheels, handles and side pockets count. A full soft bag bulges, so measure it packed.
- Weigh it at home. easyJet allows 15 kg for each bag, Wizz Air 10 kg, Pegasus 3 kg and TAP only 2 kg for the small bag. KLM, airBaltic, Volotea and Norwegian count both bags together.
- Book the cabin bag online. Bought at the airport it costs more: easyJet charges £60 for a large cabin bag added there.
- Check your fare. Economy Basic at SWISS and Lufthansa, Basic at KLM, Economy Light at SAS and MINI at airBaltic include only the small bag.
- At the gate staff use metal sizers. A bag that does not fit goes in the hold, and you pay for it.
Questions
- How big can the free bag be on Ryanair?
- 40 × 30 × 20 cm, under the seat, on every fare. It was enlarged in 2025 from 40 × 20 × 25 cm. A cabin bag of 55 × 40 × 20 cm and up to 10 kg needs Priority or a fare that includes it.
- What is the easyJet small cabin bag size?
- 45 × 36 × 20 cm including handles and wheels, up to 15 kg, free on every fare. The large cabin bag is 56 × 45 × 25 cm; added at the airport it costs £60.
- What can I take free on Wizz Air?
- One bag of up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm and 10 kg under the seat. A trolley of 55 × 40 × 23 cm and up to 10 kg needs Wizz Priority.
- Do wheels and handles count?
- Yes. easyJet, KLM, Jet2 and Southwest say so on their pages, and the sizers at the gate measure the whole bag.
- Which bag fits all airlines?
- For free under the seat, 40 × 30 × 15 cm works everywhere here except Aer Lingus. As a cabin bag, 55 × 35 × 20 cm fits all 17 airlines.
- Is there a weight limit for the free bag?
- At some airlines: easyJet 15 kg, Wizz Air and Norwegian 10 kg, Pegasus 3 kg, TAP 2 kg. Ryanair, SWISS, Lufthansa, Eurowings and Jet2 publish no weight for the small bag, but it has to fit under the seat.
- Can I take a cabin bag on Lufthansa or SWISS Economy Basic?
- No. Economy Basic includes only the small bag of 40 × 30 × 15 cm. From Economy Light you get a cabin bag of 55 × 40 × 23 cm and up to 8 kg.
- What happens if my bag is too big at the gate?
- It goes in the hold and you pay a fee. Volotea and SAS say so in their rules, and easyJet charges £60 for a large cabin bag added at the airport.
- Why is my airline missing?
- We add an airline only after reading its official page. British Airways, Vueling, Air France, Iberia, Transavia, ITA Airways and Turkish Airlines are next.
- How current is this?
- The pages were read on 13 October 2026, Ryanair’s in September 2026. Airlines change these rules without much notice: your booking shows what your fare includes.
