How tourist taxes work in Europe

Many cities in Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Portugal, and whole regions such as the Balearic Islands, Greece and Croatia, charge a tax for every night you stay. It comes on top of the room price. Usually the hotel or host collects it, often at check-out, and passes it on to the city.

How much you pay depends on four things: the place, the type of stay and its stars, who you are (many places let children stay free up to a set age, and local residents never pay) and how long you stay (many Italian and Portuguese cities only tax the first few nights). Some places charge per room instead of per person, such as Greece, Brussels, Iceland, Manchester and Liverpool. Others take a share of the room price, such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Vienna, Edinburgh, Budapest and Cologne.

How to pay less, legally

  • Mind the night caps. Florence taxes only the first 7 nights, Venice 5, Sintra 3 and Malta 15. A long stay costs less per night than a short one.
  • Pick the season. In the Balearic Islands the tax is 75 percent lower from November to April, and in Greece it drops sharply from November to March.
  • Stars matter. In Italy, France, Greece and the Balearic Islands a 3 star hotel pays clearly less than a 5 star hotel. Hostels and campsites pay least.
  • Check the age rules. Children travel free in most places, but the age differs: under 10 in Venice, under 12 in Florence, under 18 in France.
  • Do not skip it. The host has to collect it, and in most places it is the law. Ask for a receipt if you pay in cash.

Where you pay no tourist tax

Checked on official pages on 13 October 2026, these places charged no tourist tax on overnight stays: Cardiff, Cyprus, Glasgow, London, Munich, Oslo, Valencia. Cardiff and Glasgow start one in 2027, see below.

As far as we know, these places charge none either, but we have not yet confirmed it on an official page: Bilbao, Canary Islands (except Mogán), Copenhagen, Dublin, Granada, Helsinki, Krakow, Madrid, Malaga, San Sebastian, Seville, Stockholm, Warsaw.

  • Split: For 2027 (county decision of 18 December 2025): EUR 2.65 per person per night in hotels and other commercial accommodation from 1 April to 30 September and EUR 1.86 the rest of the year; campsites EUR 1.99 and EUR 1.33; household flat fee EUR 70 per bed per year.

  • Cardiff: From 1 April 2027, visitor levy: GBP 1.30 per person per night (all ages) in most accommodation; GBP 0.75 per adult in tents and shared rooms (under 18s free). For bookings from 28 September 2026, and for nights or guests added to earlier ones. Bookings over 31 nights are exempt.
  • Vienna: From 1 July 2027 the rate rises from 5 to 8 percent of the same base: the price of the stay without VAT and breakfast.

Day trips and cruises

  • Barcelona, Cruise passengers (same tax): Catalan part: 6.00 EUR per passenger if the ship stays 12 hours or less, 4.00 EUR if it stays longer, plus any Barcelona city surcharge. When a cruise ship on a trip with more than two nights on board is moored or anchored in the port of Barcelona.

No decision yet for 2027.

Quick answers

Is the tourist tax included in my booking price?
Often not. Booking sites usually show it as a charge to pay at the property, and many hotels collect it at check-out. In some cities Airbnb collects it with the booking. The calculator shows what to expect on top.
Do children pay?
In most places children stay free up to an age set by the city: under 18 in France, Bruges, Ghent and Malta, under 14 in Genoa and Como, under 12 in Florence, Basel and Palermo, under 10 in Venice and Positano. Where the tax is per room or a share of the price, as in Greece or Amsterdam, age does not matter.
Do I pay in cash or by card?
It depends on the host. Hotels add it to the bill; small hosts sometimes ask for cash at check-out. The calculator shows how each place collects it.
Do business travellers pay?
In most places yes. Berlin has taxed business trips since April 2024 and Cologne since July 2024.
Where is the tax highest?
Of the places in this calculator: per person and night, a palace hotel in Paris, at 15.60 euros with the regional surcharges. Per room, a 5 star hotel in Greece, at 15 euros a night from April to October. As a share of the price, Amsterdam, at 12.5 percent of the room price without VAT.
Are the amounts up to date?
Amounts marked as checked come from the official page of the city, region or country, read on 13 October 2026. Places marked as not yet confirmed are shown for orientation only. Rates change often, mostly on 1 January or 1 April, so check the official link before you rely on a figure.
