Warnings and places

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL). Tiles: OpenFreeMap, © OpenMapTiles. Map library: MapLibre. Vignettes and tolls: Vignette and toll checker. Each entry names its source and date.

City zones: sticker or registration first

Pick a ready route on the map: its options show the distance, the costs and any low emission zone on the way.

This map shows warnings, low emission zones, safe stops and costs on 15 ready routes, with 29 city cards. Many city zones need a sticker, a permit or a registration even when you only pass through. Last checked 3 Nov 2026, official sources only.

    • Crit’Air sticker (France)EUR 5.11 by post abroad, from certificat-air.gouv.fr only
    • Strasbourg zoneThe A355 is inside; the A4 and A35 north of Vendenheim are exempt
    • Lille zoneThe A1, A25 and A27 are inside, also in transit
    • London ULEZRegister a foreign car with EPC plc first
    • Lyon zoneThe M6 and M7 are inside; older cars use the A46
    • ItalyLeave nothing in a parked car (FCDO)

Sources: certificat-air.gouv.fr; Eurométropole de Strasbourg; Métropole Européenne de Lille; Transport for London; Métropole de Lyon; FCDO, Italy. All read on 3 Nov 2026.

    1. Pick your route on the map and compare its options.
    2. Order the sticker or registration for every zone it lists.
    3. Open the city cards for parking and risks, then save the briefing.

    Before you go

How to read the mapThe colour says what to do, the icon says why.
    • Red: do not route, stop or sleep there.
    • Yellow: go, with the one precaution the entry names.
    • Dashed grey edge: a rule for the whole area, such as campervans only on campsites. You may drive through.
    • Soft edge: an approximate area. Crisp line: an official boundary, such as a low emission zone from the city’s own map.
    • A number in a circle: places grouped at this zoom. Tap it to zoom in.
    • Grey: closed, or an old or single report without a colour.
    • Where areas overlap, only the highest level is filled.

A warning needs an official source, or two independent sources from the last 24 months. Every entry shows its sources with their dates.

The map is not a navigator: it does not know today’s closures or queues. Plan here, then drive with your own navigation app.

City cards: Britain and France9 cities: zones, parking, risks.
    • London: Register a foreign car with EPC plc before you drive in, and pay the Congestion Charge (GBP 18) on the day if you enter central London in charging hours.
    • Dover and Folkestone: Do not plan a night in a Dover council car park (not allowed); Marine Parade allows overnight parking for GBP 13. Check the vehicle for stowaways before check-in.
    • Calais: Lock the doors from the motorway to check-in, do not stop or leave the vehicle near Calais, and check it for stowaways before boarding.
    • Lille: Put a Crit’Air sticker on the windscreen before the Belgian border: the Lille zone includes the A27 and A25, even for through traffic.
    • Paris: The corridors pass Paris on the A86, which is outside the zone. Inside it, a Crit’Air sticker is needed on weekdays from 8:00 to 20:00; no fines until 31 December 2026.
    • Reims: Crit’Air 3 or better is fine in central Reims; Crit’Air 4, 5 and unclassified cars must stay out.
    • Strasbourg: Show a Crit’Air sticker before you reach the Eurométropole: the zone covers the A355 and the A35 south of Vendenheim. Park at a P+R for EUR 4.20 a day, tram included.
    • Lyon: With a Crit’Air 3 car or older, do not drive through Lyon on the M6 and M7 (both inside the zone): the A46 and A432 to the east are outside the zone polygon.
    • Bordeaux: The ring road is outside the zone: stay on it, and enter the centre only with a Crit’Air sticker, best from a P+R.

City cards: Italy7 cities: zones, parking, risks.
    • Naples: Do not drive into the centre: park at Brin (EUR 5 a day at most) or at Colli Aminei (entrance from the Tangenziale, Metro Line 1), take everything out of the car, and keep out of the new central bus lanes in via Volta, Vespucci and Nuova Marina.
    • Rome: Leave the car at a metro park and ride (EUR 1.50 for 12 hours) and take the metro; never follow the satnav into the centre on weekdays before 18:00.
    • Florence: Park at Parterre (EUR 15 a day) and walk in; if you must drive into the centre, buy the ZTL day permit first.
    • Milan: Check your plate for Area B before you go, and do not drive into Area C without paying the daily charge.
    • Genoa: Do not drive into the old town lanes: the ZTL covers the whole Centro Storico.
    • Bologna: The centre is a camera ZTL: park outside it. For a break on the A1 use Arda Ovest (TCS 71 percent, on the Lyon to Rome routes).
    • Venice: Plan where to leave the car before you arrive: roads end at Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto.

City cards: Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Luxembourg7 cities: zones, parking, risks.
    • Zurich: Check pls-zh.ch for a city car park with free spaces before you drive into the centre.
    • Basel: Buy the Swiss e-vignette (CHF 40) before the border, and to see the old town park at Parking Messe (CHF 50 for 24 hours).
    • Geneva: A Crit’Air sticker on a foreign car also covers Geneva on smog-alert days; park at a P+R (from CHF 14 with a day ticket) to visit.
    • Luxembourg: Park at P+R Bouillon, free for the first 24 hours, and go into the old town from there.
    • Munich: Leave the car at a P+R such as Messestadt Ost or Fröttmaning (EUR 1.50 a day) and take the U-Bahn: inside the Mittlerer Ring you need the green sticker.
    • Salzburg: Buy the Austrian vignette before you drive onto an Austrian motorway.
    • Vienna: Street parking is 2 hours at most on weekdays (EUR 3.40 an hour), so plan a garage for a longer visit.

City cards: Spain, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary6 cities: zones, parking, risks.
    • Barcelona: Register the car in the AMB ZBE register before you drive into Barcelona, and on the AP-7 never stop for someone signalling a fault: drive on to a lit service station.
    • Madrid: Treat the Distrito Centro (inside the first ring road) as closed to a foreign car: no page read gives a way in for foreign plates, and the fine is EUR 200.
    • Ljubljana: Buy the e-vignette before you drive onto a Slovenian motorway, and sleep only at a campsite: free standing is banned.
    • Zagreb: Keep dipped headlights on from November to March, day and night.
    • Split: Campervans may sleep only in campsites or camper parks on the coast.
    • Budapest: Buy the e-matrica before the motorway, park in a secure car park and leave nothing in the car.

Sleeping in your car or vanAllowed, tolerated or banned, country by country.

Sleep parked, not camping: nothing outside the vehicle, no awning or chairs, no grey water on the ground, one night only.

Sleeping in a parked vehicle, from the country cards of this map, checked 30 October 2026. Tap a country for the full rule and its sources; where sources conflict, the card says so.

Safe nights and good stopsCampsites and staffed service areas first.
    1. A campsite, or a motorhome aire with a barrier.
    2. A big service area, staffed 24 hours, with lights and a shop. Not a small rest area on the corridors where the map warns of theft. Sanef says rest areas are for short breaks and service areas for longer stops.
    3. Park in the car area, lit and in view, not in the lorry spaces. Lock the doors.
    4. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm. Gas attacks on sleeping campers have never been proven (Bavarian police, 2021 to 2025).

Stop scores come from published audits: TCS (Switzerland 2024, southern Europe 2025, France, Spain and Portugal 2026), ADAC (Germany 2024) and Which? (UK 2026). A top score is not a safety badge.

The Channel with a car and petsTunnel or ferry, pet rules, stowaway checks.
    • LeShuttle: 35 minutes from Calais to Folkestone, your pet stays with you in the car.
    • Irish Ferries, Dover and Calais: short-break returns for a car and passengers from GBP 116 (out on a Tuesday, back within 3 days) or GBP 147 (back within 5 days). Pet Den from GBP 15 each way.
    • With pets, check in at least 90 minutes before departure.
    • Dogs to Great Britain: microchip, rabies vaccination at least 21 days before, pet passport or health certificate, tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before arrival, counted in UK time.
    • Make your last stop well before the port, drive to check-in with the doors locked, and check the whole vehicle. The UK fines up to GBP 10,000 for each stowaway.

Electric cars and chargingHubs on the Zurich to London options; apps and registers elsewhere.

Pick Zurich to London: the list shows every public fast-charging hub along the option in driving order, with the km. Switch on “Only IONITY chargers” to see the IONITY sites and the longest gap.

Elsewhere, other apps already map every charger. Use the operators’ apps and the official registers:

London with a car registered abroadULEZ registration and the Congestion Charge.
    • The ULEZ covers all of London, every day. Cars that do not meet the standard pay GBP 12.50 a day.
    • Cars registered outside the UK must be registered with TfL’s partner EPC plc, even if they meet the standard.
    • Congestion Charge in central London: 7:00 to 18:00 on weekdays, 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends.
    • From Dover, the A2 and M2 do not use the Dartford Crossing, which is paid online by midnight the next day.
