Short answer
- The Swiss Half Fare Card costs CHF 150 for a month and pays off once your full fares come to more than CHF 300.
- The Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, buses, boats, city transport, Rigi, Stoos and Stanserhorn, but Jungfraujoch only at 25% off above Wengen or Grindelwald, where the Swiss Half Fare Card gives 50%.
- Saver Day Passes from CHF 52 (CHF 29 with the Swiss Half Fare Card; prices provisional for 2027) often win if you can fix your dates early.
Children under 6 travel free.
Travel days are the days you take a train, bus or boat. They count for the Flex and for Saver Day Passes.
Your own children travel free with the Swiss Family Card when a parent with them holds a pass or the Swiss Half Fare Card. Other children need their own ticket.
For each trip, type the full fare for one adult in the class you chose, as SBB shows it without any discount card. Tick Return for a round trip. City trams and buses count as trips too.
Tip: in the SBB app, check that no travelcard is stored under Settings, My Travelcards; if one is, the app shows half prices.
Return fares for one adult in summer, as published by the railways.
How the calculator works
- Swiss Travel Pass: the price of the shortest pass that covers your days, plus the pass price of your mountains (Rigi free, Jungfraujoch free to Wengen or Grindelwald and 25% off above, most others 50% off).
- Swiss Travel Pass Flex: the shortest Flex that covers your travel days, within one month. Its mountain discounts count only on activated days.
- Swiss Half Fare Card: CHF 150 for each month of your stay (two cards for 31 to 60 days), plus half of all your fares and mountains.
- Saver Day Passes: one per travel day, shown from the cheapest price to the dearest, because the cheap ones are limited. The lowest prices are provisional for 2027; the upper end is our estimate, as SBB publishes no highest price. Pilatus, Titlis and the Gornergrat give no discount with them, and to the Jungfraujoch they are valid only as far as Wengen or Grindelwald.
- Plain tickets: your fares as you typed them in.
- Compulsory seat reservations (Jungfraujoch, CHF 10) are added to every option.
- Each result shows what the total is made of: card or pass, tickets, mountains and reservations.
How to choose, step by step
- Open the SBB app or sbb.ch and look up the full adult fare for each trip you plan, without any discount card.
- Count your days in Switzerland and the days you will really travel.
- Type in the trips and tick the mountains you want to see.
- Look at the cheapest option, what it is made of, and the break-even line.
- If Saver Day Passes win, book them as early as you can: they go on sale six months ahead and the cheapest sell out.
- Buy only from SBB, Switzerland Tourism or the railways, and always carry your passport or ID card with the pass.

Questions and answers
- Do Swiss Travel Pass prices rise in 2027?
- No. Swiss Travel System keeps the Swiss Travel Pass, the Flex and the Swiss Half Fare Card at 2026 prices, while normal tickets rise by 3.6% on average from 13 December 2026.
- Is Jungfraujoch free with the Swiss Travel Pass?
- No. The pass takes you free to Wengen or Grindelwald; above that you get 25% off. The Swiss Half Fare Card gives 50% off.
- Can I buy the Swiss Travel Pass if I live in Switzerland?
- No. The Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss Half Fare Card are only for people whose permanent home is outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
- Do my children pay?
- Children aged 6 to 15 travel free with the free Swiss Family Card when a parent holding a Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card is with them. Children under 6 always travel free.
- Can visitors buy Saver Day Passes?
- Yes, from CHF 52 in 2nd class, or from CHF 29 with the Swiss Half Fare Card, as long as the cheap ones last. These lowest prices are provisional for 2027.
- Does the Swiss Half Fare Card cover city trams?
- It gives up to 50% off city transport in over 90 towns; trams are not free with it.
- Flex or consecutive?
- The Flex costs a little more but only uses the days you travel. It pays off if you have rest days.
- Is the pass valid on the Glacier Express?
- Yes, but the seat reservation of CHF 54 is extra.
- How early can I buy?
- The passes and the Swiss Half Fare Card up to 11 months ahead; Saver Day Passes and Supersaver Tickets up to 6 months ahead.
- Why do I type the fares myself?
- Swiss fares depend on the route and the train. The calculator never guesses them, so the result is only as good as the fares you type in from the SBB app.
- Do I need my passport?
- Yes. The Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss Half Fare Card are only valid with your original passport or ID card; copies or photos are not accepted.
- Can I buy my ticket on the train?
- Buy it before you board. Travelling without a valid ticket costs a surcharge plus the fare, and a Supersaver Ticket is valid only on the train you booked.
- My card does not work in the SBB app. What can I do?
- SBB asks for an extra card check (3D Secure). If your card fails, SBB suggests another browser or device, another card, or Apple Pay or Google Pay in the SBB Mobile app.
- Can I show my Swiss Travel Pass in the SBB app?
- Only if you bought it on sbb.ch while logged in, and not for the Flex. Otherwise show the QR code from your e-mail or a printout.
